Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects celebrates a season of ribbon cuttings for a range of community-based projects
Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects is celebrating a season of new beginnings with ribbon cuttings for community-based projects across Pennsylvania and Maryland, and it’s not over yet.
The Friendsville Branch Library, part of the Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County system, is nearing completion with a ribbon cutting soon to follow in August. Together, these projects underscore M&D’s ongoing commitment to designing spaces that honor history, expand opportunity, and strengthen the fabric of the communities we’re proud to work with.
Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center
This spring marked a meaningful milestone with the grand opening of the Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center—a project that acknowledges the organization’s 95 years of impact in the African American community. After an intimate donor preview on April 30, hundreds gathered on May 2 for the community-wide ribbon cutting, celebrating a space that honors the legacy of Crispus Attucks and invites reflection and connection.
The Center’s mass timber structure (the first in Central Pennsylvania) anchors a cascading skylit stair, Unity Courtyard, and a rooftop learning terrace. During the celebration, Crispus Attucks York CEO Bobby Simpson reflected on the generations who built and sustained the organization, urging attendees to “appreciate, appreciate, appreciate Crispus Attucks’ legacy, involvement, and contribution to the community.”
Northern Schuylkill Center for Education, Business, and the Arts (CEBA Shenandoah)
This season also brought the ribbon cutting for the new CEBA Shenandoah facility on April 30. Local leaders, partners, and community members gathered to celebrate expanded opportunities for education, engagement, and youth development in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.
"Resources like a Culinary Kitchen, Penn State University's classroom, Shenandoah Health Center, and Maker Space should have a profound effect on the borough's renewal," said Patrick Ness, Associate Principal at M&D. We’re proud to have contributed to this milestone and look forward to seeing the positive impact CEBA Shenandoah will continue to make in the community.
Four Chaplains Memorial
On Memorial Day, May 25, the Four Chaplains Memorial was dedicated at York’s Veterans Memorial Park. Hundreds gathered to honor the extraordinary sacrifice of Army chaplains Alexander D. Goode, George L. Fox, Clark V. Poling, John P. Washington, and Steward’s Mate Charles Walter David, Jr.
Designed by M&D, the memorial’s five pre-weathered Corten steel pylons, etched with narrative detail, honor the men who gave up their life vests, aided fellow soldiers, and offered comfort through hymns after the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was torpedoed during World War II. This installation marks the first memorial to recognize David alongside the Four Chaplains.
Seed to Harvest Building at Rose Hill
On June 6, Frederick County celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Seed to Harvest Building (formerly the Rose Hill Exhibit Barn) on the historic grounds of Rose Hill Manor Park in Frederick, Maryland. The event included remarks from Frederick County Parks and Recreation, the Frederick County Farm Museum Association, the County Executive, and the Maryland Secretary of Agriculture.
Designed by M&D to blend seamlessly into the park’s historic landscape, the building features vertical wood siding, traditional oversized sliding barn doors, and a standing‑seam metal roof. Inside, horizontal wood cladding and polished concrete floors create a flexible, durable setting for agricultural exhibits. The space will serve as an important educational resource for the more than 16,000 visitors and schoolchildren who explore Rose Hill each year, offering a dedicated venue to share Frederick County’s agricultural heritage with future generations.
Meanwhile, work continues elsewhere on the Rose Hill Park site, with the new Carriage Museum designed by M&D expected to be completed in July.
